Overview

SectorScope is a service created for CIPD to help attract and inspire sixth-form students to explore careers in the People Profession (human resources) within the sectors they are most passionate about. By reframing HR as a pathway into industries students already care about, the service positions the profession as diverse, impactful, and relevant to their aspirations.

​The problem

• The People Profession is often perceived through stereotypes, with limited awareness of the variety and value of its roles.

• Sixth-form students are passionate about particular sectors, but they often lack understanding of how People Profession careers could align with their interests.

• This gap reduces the appeal of the profession to young people, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.

 

The service

SectorScope provides engaging, accessible resources that communicate the scope and impact of People Profession careers. Through a co-designed toolkit, the service enables CIPD to:

• Acquire sector-specific knowledge to create compelling, relevant content.

• Establish an online presence tailored to 16–18-year-olds.

• Deliver workshops and communications that help career advisors guide students effectively.

 

By positioning the People Profession as a “passport” into the industries students care about, SectorScope reframes HR as a meaningful and aspirational career option.

The impact

• More accessible career information

Students who interacted with the prototype gained new knowledge about the People Profession and responded positively to its relevance to their interests.

• New perspectives for CIPD

The project helped the CIPD team view the profession through a fresh lens, enabling new stories and narratives to be shared with younger audiences.

• Recognition

SectorScope was awarded Best Project by CIPD for its innovative approach to engaging the next generation.
